In this second installment of my Small Business Series, I’d like to introduce you to Susan Marling, the owner of Marling Originals. She creates gorgeous, one-of-a-kind marbled and dyed silk clothing for women.
Susan started marbling silk over 25 years ago. Marbling is an ancient art form where the medium seems to have a mind of its own. It begins with a shallow tray of thickened water: Susan drops paint, drop by drop, onto the surface of the thickened water — and then, she gently combs and rakes the color droplets into intricate patterns. She then lays a piece of white silk on top of the floating paint to capture the pattern.
Once the fabric is marbled, she cuts and sews each piece of silk into one-of-a-kind silk top, jacket, scarf, or dress. Each item is unique - no two ever come out exactly the same.
